January 19 – Addressing Racial Microaggressions: Tools, Strategies, and Discussions

Description: This workshop will be hosted by the University of Toronto's Anti-Racism and Cultural Diversity Office in conjunction with Grad Minds and the Graduate English Association. Learning objectives include: increasing understanding of the experiences and impact of racial microaggressions, identifying forms of racial microaggressive behaviour and comments, discussing and developing strategies for prevention and resolution of subtle discrimination within work and learning environments, and increasing understanding of the role of management in effectively addressing and responding to occurrences of microaggressions/subtle discrimination.

About the Presenter

Natasha Prashad (she/her) is currently a Program Coordinator with the Anti-Racism and Cultural Diversity Office. She has built her careers in equity and anti-racism programming, administration and research in various professional, academic and community settings. She holds a M.A in Socio-Legal Studies from York University, with her research exploring the capacity of human rights education (HRE) principles to encourage intercultural understanding and respect for Indigenous knowledges in all levels of our education system. She firmly believes in the power of education and open dialogue as platforms for equity-seeking/equity-deserving groups to have their voices heard as well as being focused on advancing intentionally inclusive initiatives in community and institutional spaces. In addition to providing administrative support to the Human Rights Office at the Toronto District School Board, Natasha has held the position of Research Assistant with the Department of Critical Disability Studies and served as the Coordinator for Committees and Student Outreach at York University. In her spare time, Natasha loves to try new recipes, read and enjoys spending time outside in nature.
